Kibbelsteg bridges Hamburg (Germany)
In order to make the new areas of the HafenCity accessible to fire protection and first aid services, there is a need for a new network of pathways at 7.5 m above sea level (SL). The Kibbelsteg bridges connect this network to the high tide protected areas of the inner city, crossing the Zollkanal, the Brooksfleet, and the “Am Sandtorkai“ street.
The 220 m long bridge system consists of six welded steel pedestrian bridges. The bridge system has a similar design as the historical riveted steel bridges in the Speicherstadt, thus keeping the architectural integrity of this area. The 4.3 m wide pathway of the bridges is coved with wooden planks. The dimensioning of the footbridges is to accommodate fire engines. Three of the bridges are single-spanned arch bridges with lengths of 40 m, 24 m and 24 m, respectively.
