| European X-Ray Laser XFEL DESY (Hamburg)
In European cooperation the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY plans the construction of an X-ray laser. The plant is designed to produce high-intense ultra-short X-ray flashes with the characteristics of laser-light for scientific purposes.
The X-ray laser begins at the DESY premises and continues in an underground tunnel construction towards the laboratory. The total length is approx. 3.4 km. After about 2.1 km the tunnel opens out in the form of a fan and finally runs into the laboratory halls within 2 x 5 singular tubes. The diameter of the tunnels is 4.5 m and 5.2 m respectively, the soil cover varies between 6 and 38 m. The tunnel constructions will be implemented by means of a tunnel boring machine. The 40 m deep and up to 3,500 m² large pits will be executed by treating the ground water with extreme care.
